{"id":1047,"date":"2016-08-17T18:00:14","date_gmt":"2016-08-17T18:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.paranoidprofessor.com\/?p=1047"},"modified":"2016-09-09T12:19:07","modified_gmt":"2016-09-09T12:19:07","slug":"she-said-he-heard-an-office-tale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.paranoidprofessor.com\/index.php\/2016\/08\/17\/she-said-he-heard-an-office-tale\/","title":{"rendered":"she said &#8230; he heard an office tale."},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>I want to give 50 euros a year to Microsoft until I die.<\/h2>\n<p>I after taking a few minutes to parse the sentence I believe that it actually sounded more like.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4>All of my friends are using Microsoft 360 and I use it at work. \u00a0It seems pretty good, I would like to use for my personal computer.<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I am guessing that this is exactly the kind of thing that Microsoft has been dreaming of. \u00a0A nice stable income from\u00a0people who are tired of getting software installed and keeping it constantly patched on their computer.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t really need to think much to come up with my personal answer on this topic. \u00a0Purchase the software &#8230; or at least a software license and install it on the computer. \u00a0The upfront costs are a bit more but it amortizes nicely over time. \u00a0This is probably more true now than when windows was still fighting with OS\/2 for desktop supremacy.<\/p>\n<p>The desktops and laptops today are considerably more powerful now than back in the day, yet for most business tasks the business case for getting a new computer each year would be a pretty difficult sell. \u00a0My machine has a quad core with eight threads (thanks hyper-threading), just like the prior few years.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t to say that the new CPU&#8217;s don&#8217;t bring a lot to the table but what it brings may be more useful for visualization or energy consumption.<\/p>\n<p>The same is true for some of the software sold today. \u00a0Each version has more features than the previous but unless you are doing a lot collaboration you might only see that the menus or ribbons have changed.<\/p>\n<h2>Costs<\/h2>\n<p>The table actually doesn&#8217;t\u00a0fully encompass all of the options. \u00a0Microsoft actually has a number of different plans for <a href=\"https:\/\/products.office.com\/de-de\/business\/compare-office-365-for-business-plans\">consumers and business<\/a>. \u00a0They also have a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/products.office.com\/de-de\/business\/compare-more-office-365-for-business-plans\">large business and enterprise<\/a> pricing plans as well.<\/p>\n<table class=\"w3-table-all\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Sofware \/ Plan<\/th>\n<th>Cost<\/th>\n<th>online storage<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Google\u00a0Apps<br \/>\nFor work<\/td>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/a\/answer\/1247360?hl=en\">40 Euro per year<\/a><\/td>\n<td>30 GB storage<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Google\u00a0Apps<br \/>\nUnlimited<\/td>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/a\/answer\/1247360?hl=en\">120\u00a0Euro per year<\/a><\/td>\n<td>1 TB storage<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Office 365<br \/>\nHome<\/td>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/products.office.com\/de-de\/buy\/office\">99.99 Euro\u00a0per year<\/a><\/td>\n<td>1 TB storage<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Office 365<br \/>\nPersonal<\/td>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/products.office.com\/de-de\/buy\/office\">69.99\u00a0Euro\u00a0per year<\/a><\/td>\n<td>1 TB storage<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>This may be cheaper than to purchase the software outright &#8211; almost. \u00a0The good news of having a software service like this is that you don&#8217;t need to deal with the hardware (disk storage) getting full or breaking down. \u00a0The software should always be patched to the most current level. \u00a0Both Microsoft and Google are providing this intangible but very important benefit.<\/p>\n<p>My wife actually doesn&#8217;t have any of those worries. She has outsourced them to \u00a0me (along with installing windows patches and taking out the garbage).<\/p>\n<p>Purchasing the software outright isn&#8217;t necessarily much cheaper, it really depends on your time horizon. \u00a0If you really have to use the most cutting edge version of the software you will getting approximately every two years.<\/p>\n<table class=\"w3-table-all\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Sofware<\/th>\n<th>Cost<\/th>\n<th>online storage<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Office\u00a02013<\/td>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.de\/Microsoft-Office-Professional-Plus-2013\/dp\/B00UVYPNSE\/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1467728104&amp;sr=8-5&amp;keywords=microsoft+office+2013\">129.99\u00a0Euro\u00a0<\/a><\/td>\n<td>N\/A<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>If you can live with the functionality for perhaps the life\u00a0of your personal computer then the timeline might be four or five years. \u00a0This would have a cost of approximately 25 Euros per year. \u00a0If you are like one person I heard of, you would have just upgraded from Office 97 which yields the staggeringly tiny number of eight Euros per year.<\/p>\n<p>The back of the envelope numbers seem to suggest purchasing the software would be the most cost effective way to proceed. \u00a0I did consider another metric for pricing. \u00a0Her original question was not &#8220;how can I subsidize my company by purchasing my own software&#8221; but what software should she\u00a0purchase for her home computer.<\/p>\n<p>Well, she doesn&#8217;t write novels and presumably her work reports and presentations would be done at work. \u00a0Sending letters through the post is almost unheard of, so that means she is probably looking to do the occasional report or presentation at home. \u00a0Perhaps, depending on which <a href=\"http:\/\/jobsearch.about.com\/od\/careerdevelopment\/qt\/stay-at-a-job.htm\">statistics you believe<\/a>, she will also be\u00a0using this to update her resume.<\/p>\n<p>What this might mean is that she would be working at home on perhaps \u00a0perhaps five reports a year and a resume every three years. \u00a0It might be even cheaper to use either Google Apps or Office 365 but sign up for a single month when you really needed it.<\/p>\n<p>There is one more solution that beats all the others hands down.<\/p>\n<table class=\"w3-table-all\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Sofware<\/th>\n<th>Cost<\/th>\n<th>online storage<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Apache<br \/>\nOpenOffice<\/td>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openoffice.org\/download\/index.html\">Free<\/a><\/td>\n<td>N\/A<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>LibreOffice<\/td>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.libreoffice.org\/download\/libreoffice-still\/\">Free<\/a><\/td>\n<td>N\/A<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>LibreOffice is a fork from the original OpenOffice that was previously owned by Oracle. The Apache is now the maintainer of the OpenOffice suite. \u00a0Oracle decided that the OpenOffice product would be better managed by another organization with a non-commercial focus and so set OpenOffice free.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.infoworld.com\/article\/2623802\/open-source-software\/oracle-gives-up-on-commercial-open-office.html\">&#8220;Given the breadth of interest in free personal productivity applications and the rapid evolution of personal computing technologies, we believe the OpenOffice.org project would be best managed by an organization focused on serving that broad constituency on a non-commercial basis,&#8221; said Oracle Chief Architect Edward Screven in a statement.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Both of these open source office package really provide value other than costing anything. \u00a0They are full office suites that can do word processing, spreadsheet and presentations. \u00a0They are not only just as powerful as the market leader, well almost, but it is possible to give a copy to your friend or coworker without going to jail.<\/p>\n<p>They are more traditional software packages, that are installed on your personal computer but can be used with other popular solutions such as dropbox, onedrive or google drive if you need access from anywhere.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Get the solution that you are most comfortable with. \u00a0Open source office software is more than adequate for a lot of situations, however, don&#8217;t overlook simply purchasing Microsoft office. \u00a0Buying and using \u00a0Microsoft office for 3 or more years gives 100% compatibility without succumbing to the upgrade treadmill.<\/p>\n<p>Once you are ready to move on you might<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">*<\/span> be able to offer the still working software to someone who might want it.<\/p>\n<p>*Depending on the license that came with the software.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I want to give 50 euros a year to Microsoft until I die.
