{"id":2352,"date":"2017-05-20T12:48:46","date_gmt":"2017-05-20T12:48:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.paranoidprofessor.com\/?p=2352"},"modified":"2017-05-20T12:48:46","modified_gmt":"2017-05-20T12:48:46","slug":"and-because-perception-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.paranoidprofessor.com\/index.php\/2017\/05\/20\/and-because-perception-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8230; and because perception matters"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<h3>&#8220;I\u00a0am from the government and i am here to help&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Ronald Reagan<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It has certainly been a while since the government or the career politician has received a lot of respect. \u00a0I don&#8217;t find any statistics going back more than a few decades but it turns out that US politicians, especially congressman, end up much lower in the ranking over time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/1600\/congress-public.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Congress approval ratings in 2017<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 20%<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicpolicypolling.com\/main\/2013\/01\/congress-less-popular-than-cockroaches-traffic-jams.html\" target=\"_blank\">Congress less popular than<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0France<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t really want to defend the career politician but in this day and age their job is much tougher than when some of their predecessors such as\u00a0when Abe Lincoln was in office. Actually, today it is even much harder than some of the more recent office holders such as Reagan or Clinton. \u00a0With the rise of technology their previous votes, speeches, or other misdeeds that have occurred in the last months, years or decades now come back to haunt them &#8211; sometimes in the form of video.<\/p>\n<p>If you thought it was tough living down something you did in your youth imagine your every move being recorded for later use by groups\u00a0just looking to find discrepancies or &#8220;flip flops&#8221; of opinion. \u00a0In addition, people or groups\u00a0with personal agenda&#8217;s use all of this information with the intent of causing a\u00a0politician to look stupid or clueless.<\/p>\n<p>If you think that dealing with facts if difficult then try to imagine dealing perception. \u00a0It is just as powerful but not always grounded in facts. \u00a0There is even a trading\u00a0adage to this effect.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Buy the rumor, Sell the fact<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It is because perception is so powerful that small companies as well as large companies struggle hard to shape perception. \u00a0No CEO wants to loose customers or market capitalization because the public perceives them to be ambivalent about some topic or other &#8211; perception matters.<\/p>\n<p>James Comey may have been fired for a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/why-james-comey-fired-fbi-606372\" target=\"_blank\"> lot of reasons<\/a> but the reason that most people are looking closely at is that he was investigating the Trump campaign into collusion with Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Were there any good reasons for firing James Comey? \u00a0Probably. What this the right time to do so? I suspect that historians will be answering these questions for years to come but this firing could be adding to the public perception that President Trump has something to hide.<\/p>\n<p>This one firing would not necessarily matter so much if it was the only thing that has occurred during President Trump&#8217;s brief tenure as President.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 1cm;\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-comey-michael-flynn-investigation-shut-down-request-fbi-director-nsa-a7739706.html\" target=\"_blank\">Did Trump really ask Mr. Comey to stop the investigation Michael Flynn.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-politics\/wp\/2017\/04\/14\/trump-to-discontinue-obama-policy-of-voluntarily-releasing-white-house-visitor-logs\/?utm_term=.e8db18f704d5\" target=\"_blank\">White house to discontinue making visitors list public.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-39172635\" target=\"_blank\">Accusing President Obama bug candidate Trump <\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/donald-trump-russia-vladimir-putin-latest-campaign-team-treason-intelligence-contact-us-election-new-a7580856.html\" target=\"_blank\">His national security adviser accused of improper contact with Russians during campaign<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2017\/03\/21\/politics\/ivanka-trump-west-wing\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gives daughter Ivanka security clearance <\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-38737713\" target=\"_blank\">Illegal immigration voting claim<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In fact President Trump should be happy that special prosecutor Robert Mueller has been brought in to finish this task. \u00a0If for no other reason than it helps to refute\u00a0the perception that there is anything that needs to be hidden, because perception matters.<\/p>\n<p>It actually does not help President Trump&#8217;s case when he is exercising his hyperbole in some of his statements about this current situation.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 1cm;\">\n<p class=\" \"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/05\/18\/trump-tweets-special-prosecutor-robert-mueller-appointment-238543\" target=\"_blank\">the single greatest witch hunt<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/05\/18\/trump-tweets-special-prosecutor-robert-mueller-appointment-238543\" target=\"_blank\">No politician in history \u2014 and I say this with great surety \u2014 has been treated worse or more unfairly.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The people who were happy with President Trump may or may not be less happy with him now.
